Fourteen markets ban screenings of Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ over same-sex relationship
Fourteen places won't show the Pixar movie "Lightyear" because of a same-sex relationship
Pixar's "Lightyear" has been banned from theatres in 14 majority-Muslim countries or territories because it shows a relationship between two people of the same gender.Disney, which owns Pixar, told the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that it would not change the movie to get rid of scenes like a kiss between two married women.
On Monday, the United Arab Emirates banned the movie. The Journal says that the country is next to Bahrain, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Oman, the Palestinian territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. This summer, Disney's streaming service, called Disney+, is coming out in a number of countries, but it wasn't clear if "Lightyear" would be on the platform in those places.
Reuters said that it also seems unlikely that the movie will be shown in China
The Media Regulatory Office of the United Arab Emirates said on Monday that the movie couldn't be shown because it didn't have the right "age rating" and because it didn't follow "the country's media content standards."
The decision was made after conservative Emiratis noticed a social media campaign calling for the film to be banned in the country. The Hill has asked Disney what they have to say about it.
On Friday, "Lightyear" comes out in the United States
The movie is a spin-off from the "Toy Story" series. Chris Evans voices the main character, Buzz Lightyear, in the movie. In one scene, Uzo Aduba, who voices Buzz's best friend Alisha Hawthorne, kisses her same-sex partner.
